A Special Release Pikachu Promo Aims to Be Super Effective On Speculators

To celebrate the launch of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop stocked with exclusive items. Enthusiasts will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the museum's aesthetic. The big draw, though, is a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus at the pop-up. The store is scheduled both the physical location and its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated tome filled with beautiful artwork depicting Pokémon in their natural habitats. The concept like the kind of research a Pokémon Professor might publish after trainers provide field notes, or a naturalist's journal could have sketched had the famous islands were populated by Pidgeys instead of birds. Part of the charm stems from the book's scholarly treatment, treating Pokémon as a legitimate scientific inquiry. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Promo Card Different

It is common to issue special edition promos celebrating major tournaments or crossover partnerships. A lot such promotional cards typically highlight the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new promotion apart is its distinctly bigger dimensions. While precise specs have not been publicly disclosed, availability will certainly be highly restricted, with fans limited to only a single card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Activity

Per a company statement, some of the pop-up items will also be sold outside the museum walls. However, a wider release is slated for select retailers in the UK. Critically, fans will not be able to purchase this promo through the online Pokémon Center. While reseller interest is a given, the setup suggests they're going to have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers this time around. If you're feeling left out, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"All profits from purchases from the Museum shop and from its web shop, including these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the research of 400 scientists dedicated to conducting studies and finding solutions to the planetary emergency," the statement says.
