Alan Turing Institute Kicks Off New Mission to Safeguard Britain from Online Assaults
The UK's top artificial intelligence institute has announced a major project to help defend the nation from digital threats targeting critical infrastructure including energy, transportation and public services.
Institute Restructuring
The UK's premier AI research center will implement a programme of science and innovation specifically designed to protect the UK from adversarial risks, according to a Tuesday declaration.
This fresh focus follows organizational reforms at the publicly-funded organization, including the resignation of its previous CEO last month after both workforce dissatisfaction and government pressure for comprehensive reform.
Rising Online Risks
The latest project comes amid growing concern about the nation's susceptibility to internet outages and digital assaults.
Recent events have highlighted these vulnerabilities, including a major outage affecting global cloud computing and recent cyber-attacks that affected operations at key facilities and logistics systems across multiple companies.
Guidance and Direction
A ex-military leader of the the nation's space operations center will provide findings next month on how the publicly-supported center can optimally help the extent of national AI objectives in defense, national security and intelligence.
Organizational Refocusing
The center's head, a previous Amazon UK leader, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the 440-staff institute have been closed, spun out or completed because they do not align with the fresh focus.
Organizational Difficulties
The center has faced organizational challenges since last year as staff protested against reforms, culminating in a group of employees filing a whistleblower complaint to the appropriate oversight organization.
The institute's leadership stated that these employee allegations were independently investigated by a external organization that found them to have lack merit.
Wider Investigation Areas
The center will also concentrate on utilizing machine learning for climate-related uses and medical progress.
Researchers will develop ways to use the rapidly-developing tools to more quickly and precisely predict changes in atmospheric developments, sea conditions and polar ice, partly to more effectively guide government emergency planners.
The center will also target tangible emissions reductions in transport systems, production methods and critical infrastructure.
Health Technology Breakthroughs
In the medical field, the priority will be on building computerized models of heart systems, representing a leading edge of individualized AI-powered treatment that could better therapeutic procedures and recovery prospects for acutely ill cardiovascular cases.
