Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever stopped the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the continuing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy was compromised after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
