England's Assistant Coach Reveals The Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
In the past, Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer started through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He had found his purpose.
Metoric Climb
His advancement has been remarkable. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a reputation through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career included top European clubs, and he held international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the peak as he describes it.
“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a systematic approach so we can for optimal success.”
Focus on Minutiae
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo test boundaries. Their strategies include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”
Ambitious Trainers
He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate long hours toward. It’s our job not just to keep up of changes but to surpass them and create our own ones. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to knowledge to execution.
“To create a system enabling productivity in that window, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”
Upcoming Matches
The coach is focusing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.
“We are both certain that the style of play ought to embody everything that is good from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared these days. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”
Passion for Progress
Barry’s hunger for development is relentless. While training for his pro license, he felt anxious about the presentation, since his group contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered the most challenging environments available to him to hone his presentations. Including a prison locally, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the team dismissed most of his staff while keeping Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea became Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he brought Barry over of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
