French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to support the plan and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the previous government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
