Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
