Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
