Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
