Forecasters have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be low, making warm wraps vital, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Activated

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
