A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
