The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
