The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
