The network's Premier Fresh Series of 2025 Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
