Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
